The hotel towers are covered in the signature purple and red glass and the Rio's 2,563 suites range in size from 600 ft² up to 13,000 ft² with floor to ceiling windows. The complex includes a huge wine cellar that has over 50,000 bottles. The Rio Pavilion convention center has a total of 160,000 ft² of space and there is a race and sports book on site also.

History

The hotel opened on January 15, 1990 as a locals casino. It had been constructed and was owned and operated by Marnell Corrao Associates. A 20-story expansion tower was added to the current Ipanema Tower in 1993. The Rio was purchased by Harrah's Entertainment in 1999 for $888 million. It hosted the World Series of Poker in 2005, the first time this event was not held at Binion's. Binion's was used for the final three tables and the last two days of the competition as part of the celebration of Las Vegas' centennial.

The Carnival World Buffet has been a signature attraction since the casino opened. It was the first buffet in Las Vegas to have multiple live cooking stations and themed sections on the buffet line. If you search around you can often find coupons for discounts and deals on the buffet.

"I do not think it is a great hotel for families but if you don't have a family, then it is PERFECT! I found the Casino to be great, the staff were excellent and the VooDoo Lounge on the top floor provided ample entertainment combined with a spectacular view of the Strip. It was non-stop fun at The Rio, and I will be back for sure! It was like one big party the whole time I was there!"

"The Rio was an average hotel. Billows of smoke and tacky cocktail waitresses are the first thing that you see when you enter the Rio's lobby. The rooms were worth the money that we paid but the atmosphere at the hotel left something to be desired. I would recommend this hotel for singles and couples on a budget.
